EPRI GIC Monitor

What:

The Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC) RF Monitor is a specialized device designed to measure both alternating current (a.c.) and direct current (d.c.) flowing in conductors. It comes in two different designs: one for rigid bus conductors up to 10 inches in diameter and another for conductors up to 2.5 inches in diameter. Additionally, the device features on-board algorithms capable of analyzing harmonics up to the 7th order, providing comprehensive monitoring capabilities.

How:

The GIC RF Monitor operates by harvesting power from the a.c. currents in energized conductors, eliminating the need for external power sources in these scenarios. For deenergized conductors, the device can be powered using either battery packs or solar panels, depending on the required measurement rate. This flexibility ensures continuous monitoring regardless of the conductor’s state. The device’s algorithms process the collected data to provide detailed harmonic analysis, enhancing its diagnostic capabilities.

Why:

The GIC RF Monitor is used to detect and analyze geomagnetically induced currents, which can pose significant risks to power systems, including transformer damage and grid instability. By providing real-time monitoring and harmonic analysis, the device helps utilities and grid operators identify and mitigate potential issues before they escalate. This proactive approach enhances the reliability and resilience of power systems, ensuring a stable and secure electricity supply.
