EPRI SF₆ Density Monitor: Use case

The problem:

Traditional SF₆ monitoring systems rely on pressure-based measurements and threshold alarms, which may not detect slow leaks early enough. These systems often require wiring and manual configuration, increasing installation complexity and cost.

RF monitoring approach:

By continuously measuring gas density, the system enables early detection of SF₆ leaks, allowing for timely maintenance interventions. Multiple alarm levels can be configured to support a tiered response strategy, enhancing operational safety and efficiency. Additionally, remote configuration capabilities provide flexibility by allowing reporting and measurement settings to be adjusted without the need for on-site access.

Lessons learnt:

Continuous monitoring and data capture allow the user to analyze data and to spot trends. The use of wireless systems has enhanced reliability while reducing maintenance overhead. Most importantly, early detection of SF₆ leaks significantly minimizes emissions, contributing to a lower environmental impact and improved regulatory compliance. This also allows maintenance to be planned efficiently and in advance.

Status:

The RF Monitors are operational and integrated with EPRI systems. They are actively used for continuous SF₆ monitoring in breakers and GIS, supporting proactive maintenance and environmental compliance.
